IPL all set for Bangalore launch

After all the hype, the Indian Premier League, with its potential to transform world cricket forever, begins on Friday with a floodlit match in Bangalore.

The contests between eight teams with most of the top names in the game will be closely watched in England, the birthplace of Twenty20 cricket. The ECB is in talks with an American billionaire to set up its own version.

The first match is between Bangalore, led by Rahul Dravid and Kolkata, captained by Sourav Ganguly. The former India captains will walk out for the toss in a stadium plunged in darkness.

The six-week tournament, culminating in the final in Mumbai on 1 June, should see some mouthwatering cricket with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai), Ricky Ponting (Kolkata) and Matthew Hayden (Chennai) facing the bowling of Brett Lee (Punjab) and Shane Warne (Rajasthan).

Star names Tendulkar, Anil Kumble and Nathan Bracken are injured and out of the opening exchanges. The most exciting fast bowler around, South Africa's Dale Steyn, is playing domestic cricket for the Titans back home and will also miss the start.

Meanwhile, England's only representative, Dimitri Mascarenhas, will only be released from Hampshire duty for a fortnight some time in May. The IPL may be a vivid symbol of the new wealth in India.

It will certainly be a new experience for the fans. The ones that do make it through the turnstiles will be supporting players from all corners of the world who they have never cheered for before.

There will be strange sub-plots too. Harbhajan Singh will be playing for Mumbai, and therefore against his "local" team Punjab. And how will fans of seven of the eight teams react each time Tendulkar - for so long the favourite of all Indians - is dismissed?

India win by 8 wickets in the third and final Test against South Africa at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur.

With this win, Team India have levelled the Future Cup series and retained their position in the ICC Test rankings. Harbhajan Singh was declared Man of the Series for picking an amazing haul of 19 wickets in the series.

Playing their second innings, South Africa were cheaply bowled out for 121-all out on Day 3 of the third Test. Spinner Harbhajan took a four wicket haul, while Virender Sehwag struck three vital wickets leaving Indian batsmen to chase a measly 62 run target to win the match and level the series.

Opening India's second innings play on a bouncy wicket on Day 3, Sehwag scored a quickfire 22 in 12 balls, with two huge sixes off Paul Harris. Sourav Ganguly on 13 and Dravid on 18 runs remained unbeaten at the end of play.

Earlier, replying to the Proteas' first innings total of 265-all out, India put up an aggregate of 325 runs taking a lead of 60 runs. Ganguly top scored playing a handsome knock of 87 runs, with VVS Laxman giving him company in the top scorers with a 33rd Test fifty. The Bengal Tiger was rightly adjudged Man of the Match.

India wrapped up the triangular one-day international cricket competition when they beat Australia by nine runs to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three finals series at Brisbane Tuesday.

The Indians made 258-9 in their 50 overs then restricted the home side to 249 to claim a thrilling win and take the final ever triangular series to be played in Australia. Veteran Sachin Tendulkar led the Indian batting with a fine 91 before newcomer Praveen Kumar tore through the Australian top order, claiming Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke with just 32 runs on the board.

Kumar came back at the death to bowl Brett Lee and finish the match with 4-46 from 10 overs to signal his arrival on the international scene. Australian allrounder James Hopes led a rearguard action, scoring a career-high 63, but he kept losing batting partners and was last man out when caught at mid-off trying to blast 13 runs off the final over.

After Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat, India were 205-3 at one stage and heading for a score of more than 300. But when an injury-hampered Tendulkar was dismissed for 91, the scoring rate slowed and Australia's bowlers began to gain control.

Tendulkar was well supported by Yuvraj Singh (38), M.S. Dhoni (36) and Robin Uthappa (30), but the Indians were at least 50 runs short of where they should have been.

India lifted the under-19 World Cup for the second time after a 12-run victory over South Africa in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2000 winners were bowled out for just 159 after being put in by South African skipper Wayne Parnell, with Tanmay Srivastava's 46 the top score. But Ajitesh Argal took two wickets as South Africa slumped to 22-4 in reply. A rain interruption left them with a revised target of 116 from 25 overs, but despite 35 by Reeza Hendricks, they could only manage 103-8.

Ravindra Jadeja and Siddarth Kaul also picked up two wickets each, with Kaul having Parnell caught at square leg for 29 in the final over to seal victory. India's win rounded off a triumphant day which also saw the senior national team beating Australia in the first match of the best-of-three CB Series final in Sydney. And it also saw India coach Dav Whatmore complete a notable double, having guided Sri Lanka to victory in the 1996 World Cup.

"It was a great effort by the whole team. I would like to particularly thank our coach, who has been great with us and taught us to believe in ourselves. "We may not have put up a big total but we knew it was not going to be easy for South Africa to chase under lights," India skipper Virat Kohli commented.

Magnificent Tendulkar seals victory

March 2, 2008 India 4 for 242 (Tendulkar 117*, Rohit 66) beat Australia 8 for 239 (Hayden 82, Hussey 45) by six wickets.

Tendulkar scripted a magnificent unbeaten 117 and shared a 123-run fourth-wicket stand with Rohit Sharma to take India to an emphatic six-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the CB Series finals.

India thoroughly deserved their win through Tendulkar's excellent century, his 42nd ODI ton, and eighth against Australia, but the first against them in their country.

Here's Ponting. "We were probably 20 or 30 runs short. The wicket held together really well. Another sloppy performance, not only from our batters but I thought our bowlers bowled as badly as they have all series. A good batting effort from Sachin, though.

On to Brisbane where "it's just about getting our heads right, a couple of the guys are disappointed with the way they got out."

Now here's Dhoni. "It was a good track to bat on. We got the wickets, that really put the brakes on the Aussie innings in the middle overs. The wicket was very exploited by Harbhajan and Piyush Chawla."

Australia suffered a jolt ahead of their cricket tri-series finals against India when they lost an inconsequential cricket tri-series game against Sri Lanka by a narrow margin of 13 runs in Melbourne on Friday.
Chasing Sri Lanka's competitive total of 221, the world champions got off to a flying start with Adam Gilchrist (83 off 50 balls) launching a blistering assault but completely lost the plot after his dismisal to be bundled out for 208 in 48.1 overs. It was dramatic collapse by the Australians who were cruising comfortably at 113 for one at one stage before losing their remaining nine wickets for just 95 runs in a thrilling floodlit encounter at the MCG, allowing the islanders to salvage some pride.
The Sri Lankans, who have already been eliminated from the title race, fought back brilliantly after an early collapse to not only end the series on a winning note but also dent Australia's confidence a little bit ahead of the best-of-three finals against India beginning in Sydney on Sunday.
The two Aussie tailenders Brett Lee (37) and Nathan Bracken (14 not out) raised hopes of a stunning victory by putting on 35 runs for the last wicket leaving the Sri Lankans a little worried. With the home team needing 14 runs in the last two overs, the Sri Lankan captain gambled by bringing in Sanath Jayasuriya and the wily veteran struck in his first ball by castling Lee. The victory was the perfect gift the Lankans could give to their two senior teammates -- Sanath Jayasuriya and spin wizard Muthiah Muralitharan -- who played their last match on Australian soil.

The Chennai Superstars pulled it off when it mattered the most as they won the finals of the inaugural Indian Cricket League (ICL) Twenty20 championship here Sunday evening, beating the local favourites Chandigarh Lions by 12 runs.
The Superstars also took away the winners' prize of Rs.39 million ($1 million). Put into bat by the Lions who won the toss at the Tau Devi Lal cricket stadium, the Superstars put up a score of 155 runs in their 20 overs, losing 8 wickets. Opener Ian Harvey, who has been among runs in this championship, gave them a good start, scoring 36 runs from 31 balls. Captain Stuart Law contributed with a 28-ball 34 runs.
In reply, the Lions kept losing wickets at regular intervals after their opening batsmen Imran Farhat and Hamish Marshall failed to give them a good start. Tejinder Pal Singh put up a fight with 35 runs from 33 balls. He top-scored for the Lions. As the match seemed drifting away from the fold of the Lions, Andrew Hall and Sarabjit Singh put up a fight, scoring 30 not out runs from 27 balls and 28 runs from 18 balls respectively, but failed to finish it off for their team. Skipper Chris Cairns could not do much Sunday, scoring just 5 runs from 10 balls. The Lions could muster 143 runs from their 20 overs, losing 8 wickets.

Dhoni focuses on the positives

Dhoni focuses on the positives

Instead of being disappointed over the narrow loss to Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni chose to focus on the positives; he praised his bowlers for recovering from the initial assault and lauded Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa for being undaunted by the big total following an early collapse.

"It was quite difficult to recover from the kind of the start," Dhoni said, after India fought back from a dismal 50 for 4 to come within 18 runs of the 317 Australia had amassed. "It was getting closer and closer with the way Gautam and Robin batted. We were fortunate enough to make it a close match."

Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, also felt his bowlers, who have consistently pulled the team out of holes the batsmen had been creating during the series, relaxed after another bright start. "We started our bowling very well and Brett [Lee] once again showed the knack at getting breakthroughs," he said. "The game got closer than we'd have liked to. It's the first time our bowlers have been under a bit of pressure and we've got some work to do to make sure we get our stuff right."

Ponting was also unstinting in his praise for the architects of India's turnaround. "Gambhir and Uthappa played well," he said. "Gambhir worked the ball around well, especially to third man, hit some good clean shots, ran well. His innings was terrific."

Despite a disastrous start to their chase, India recovered with Gambhir and Dhoni steadying the innings with a 98-run stand. Once Dhoni fell to the accurate Lee, Uthappa - who made a brisk 51 - stitched together a valuable partnership that kept Indian hopes alive. "There was a time when we weren't thinking about getting 300 runs," Dhoni said. "We were just thinking of partnerships."

Indian Premier League (IPL) Vs ICL

Video:

IPL is scheduled to start in April 2008 and will last for 44 days, involving 59 matches. The prize money for the league will be around Rs 13 crore (US $3million).

Each team will have a pool of 16 players, with a maximum of eight foreign players and a minimum of four under-22 players. Additionally, at least four players must be from the catchment area where the team is based.

The governing council consists of Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi, Sunil Gavaskar, MAK Pataudi and Ravi Shastri, Rajiv Shukla, Chirayu Amin, Inderjit Singh Bindra and Arun Jaitley.

Although it is going to be a franchise system, some foreign players have already been contracted by the BCCI to play in the IPL.

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) is a private cricket league that runs parallel to the existing cricket league managed by BCCI. Matches in the ICL follow the Twenty20 format. Tau Devi Lal stadium in Panchkula, near Chandigarh, hosted the ICL for the 2007 season.
